Sir, – On a visit to Limerick in the early 1970s, our party of three visited a local hostel seeking three pints of Guinness. The house policy meant that the male in our party could be served but, as in many other establishments of the time, a Guinness in this quantity was contrary to house policy for the two females.
After much discussion with a sympathetic barman, we were given one full pint for the man, two half pints each for the women and two empty pint glasses as an accompaniment, with the extra penny for the two extra glasses deducted. – Yours, etc,
