Sir, – You report that the EU plans to impose sanctions against Iran in response to its missile attack on Israel (“EU to draw up proposals on expanding sanctions against Iran following attack on Israel”, News, April 16th). Iran launched approximately 300 missiles at Israel on April 13th, a reprehensible action, and luckily no one was killed.
By contrast, in the first week of the conflict in Gaza, Israel dropped 6,000 bombs on one of most densely populated areas in the world.
It is estimated that by now, Israel has dropped more than 25,000 tonnes of explosives on Gaza, and more than 34,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed.
In addition, the Israeli Defence Forces cut off food and medical supplies to Gaza and countless others have died from this war tactic.

Despite this horrific collective punishment of the Gazan population, there is no talk of sanctions against Israel. If any other country in the world behaved the way Israel is behaving, the EU would move rapidly to impose stringent sanctions. I feel ashamed to be an EU citizen and I am at a loss to explain why the EU gives Israel a pass to do what it wants in Gaza.
