Sir, – The many letters on the polite custom of offering a seat on public transport (Letters, April 29th, May 1st) remind me of an incident when I was a child. My father acted with the Abbey Theatre for a while. During that time he played alongside the actress Maureen Delaney, who, apparently, was his aunt in one production. Ms Delaney lived on the same bus route as we did, and when she got on the bus, she greeted my father with, “And how’s me Aunt?”
She never waited to be offered a seat but “removed” any unsuspecting child from its seat and proceeded to make herself comfortable.
It seemed her natural right to have a seat on the bus.
