Sir, – Philip Wheatley makes the very valid point (Letters, May 14th) that the home countries of the prospective marine wind farm developers would never permit such close-in fixed-bottom turbines on eco-sensitive sandbanks.
The proposed gigantic ring of carbon and steel locking in the coast of Ireland is the cheap fix.
Floating technology at substantial distance offshore is the most obvious sustainable solution, not least for the 1.5 million people in the Dublin/Wicklow region. The massive turbines proposed for the Kish Bank are less than 10km from the Fingal coastline, marginally more for south Dublin.
The only visibility the overseas developers will have is of vast accruals in their bank balances thanks to those Irish eejits who couldn’t wait to buy an environmental pup. – Yours, etc,
