Climate crisis – a collective action problem

A truly global response

Sir, – In a week where it was confirmed that the past 12 months were the hottest in recorded history, I am astounded that you elected to publish the classic climate change whataboutism trope that reducing greenhouse gases in Ireland will have no significant impact on global emissions (“Magical thinking on climate targets”, Letters, June 6th). Only six countries in the world currently emit more than 2 per cent of the global total. Every other country might consider themselves to be “negligible”. But collectively, they add up to more than one-third of the world’s emissions. That’s more than China.

Climate change is a collective action problem. It requires every country to play its part. This shouldn’t be difficult to comprehend. – Yours, etc,

Dr GAVIN DALY,
