Deposit and return

Sir, – I learned a new word yesterday, “junksters” – youngsters who collect discarded plastic bottles and cans to get the deposit refund due on their return to vending machines. These young people are having a significant impact in reducing the levels of litter on the streets of our lovely town of Westport. I have read that the good people of Clontarf in Dublin have not experienced a similar improvement in the litter levels in St Anne’s Park. Perhaps the parents of this well-to-do suburb should consider reducing their youngsters’ pocket money? – Yours, etc,

DOLORES BRADY,

Westport,

Co Mayo.
