The price of hearing aids

A medical necessity

Sir, – Upon recently observing my elderly parent purchasing new hearing aids, it struck me how outrageous the cost of these necessary items were for this vulnerable cohort. Considering how vital they are for any individual, irrespective of age, to have any decent quality of life, the cost of hearing aids is in dire need of re-evaluation. In modern times, hearing aids should be free of charge or at a minimal cost, especially for the elderly. Have they not worked long and hard and paid enough taxes all their lives to at least be granted the basic tools to keep them connected in this ever-more tech-based world? – Yours, etc,

ELIZABETH HUSSEY,
