Sir, – Given that the forthcoming budget is the last to be drafted prior to the next general election and given the apparent imminent appointment of the present Minister for Finance as a European commissioner, it makes sense to appoint as his successor someone who is experienced in this field.

The obvious nominee for the post is the present Minister for Public Expenditure, Paschal Donohoe. – Yours, etc,
