Sir, – Further to “Garda Commissioner calls for graduated fines to punish those caught speeding” (News, July 12th), twice in the last week I have had to travel from Mornington to Mullingar, a distance of approximately 88 kilometres on regional roads.
On those trips I witnessed some awful driving such as speeding and overtaking on double white lines.
At no time on those return trips did I see any Garda presence.
Speed limits on some of the narrow and twisty sections are far too high so it is not surprising that the majority of road deaths occur on these regional roads. Why do we have to put fully trained gardaí on road traffic duties when a special corps of suitably trained personnel could be provided holding special powers with regard to traffic laws?
Ann Ingle: Deliberately going out of my way to move for no particular reason has never appealed to me
Gerry Thornley: How about an alternative look at Ireland’s Six Nations win over England?
Is Ireland anti-Semitic, an outlier of tolerance or in the middle ground?
How risky is it to buy a second-hand EV?
There is no point in enacting laws that are not enforced.
The suggestion that a technical inspection of motorcycles might reduce deaths in this area is nonsense since it is the behaviour of a lot of these riders that is the issue. – Yours, etc,
TONY GREANY,
Mornington,
Co Meath.
