Sir, – In the list of cities emerging as winners after hosting the Olympic Games, Munich should also be mentioned (”Olympic host cities – more winners”, Weekend, July 27th).
Hosting the Games in 1972 brought massive infrastructural improvements (the subway, for example) and transformed Munich from a “million-people-village” into a global metropolis. In addition, most, if not all, of the former Olympic facilities are still in use, either as concert venues (did anyone say Taylor Swift?) or as public sports and recreation facilities.
The Olympic Village was transformed into student accommodation. Creative ways of public fundraising and a splitting of costs between the city of Munich, the state of Bavaria and the federal German government allowed Munich to pay off its share of the costs over a period of six years from the running budgets. – Yours, etc,
TOBIAS MUELLER,
