Sir, – Could the Green Party’s opposition to the planned deferral of the residential zoned land tax be the catalyst that prompts Taoiseach Simon Harris to go to the country at the earliest possible date after Budget 2025?
Not that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil would need much encouragement to dissolve the current administration; for despite the Taoiseach’s insistence that the Government will go the full distance, I get the distinct impression that, of late, both parties seem pretty resigned to fighting an autumn general election. Indeed, the Green Party, which I suspect would like to see the Coalition run its full term, might even benefit from the calling of a snap election.
Buoyed by a favourable public reaction to the veritable cornucopia of goodies contained in what promises to be the biggest giveaway budget in the history of the State, all three parties can expect their activists and candidates to be afforded relatively polite receptions when they go about canvassing on the doorsteps. Whether such cordial welcomes will translate into votes at the ballot box for one or other of the parties is anybody’s guess; but with Sinn Féin’s prospects currently up in the air, things look quite propitious for the three Government parties. – Yours, etc,
