Hate speech legislation

Draconian overreach

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott
The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Your report regarding the dropping of part of the proposed hate speech legislation said that it had been “viewed as controversial by backbenchers, Opposition parties, as well as free speech groups and tech billionaire Elon Musk” (“Plan to introduce hate speech laws has been dropped, Minister for Justice confirms”, News, September 21st). Your report neglected to mention the ordinary citizens, whose opposition to such a draconian measure was clearly illustrated, and given ample expression in your own, as well as other, print media. – Yours, etc,

PETER DECLAN O’HALLORAN,

Belturbet,

Co Cavan.
