National treasures

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – I became an admirer of the playing and singing of Rory Gallagher (who died in 1995) in the 1970s, buying his recordings, and attending any concerts he gave. He was a blues and rock musician of great originality and world-class virtuosity. So I am happy to learn that his famous Stratocaster guitar is to be donated to the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) and will be placed on display.

I wonder when will the NMI display other musical instruments associated with famous Irish figures that have lain in their storage areas for decades. I am thinking, for instance, of the union pipes of Lord Edward Fitzgerald (who died in 1798) or the harp of Turlough Carolan (who died in 1738). – Yours, etc,

TERRY MOYLAN,

Dublin 12.
