Sir, – Further to “Taskforce recommends 10 ‘big moves’ to revitalise Dublin city centre” (News, October 22nd), you don’t need a taskforce to establish what is wrong with Dublin city. Ask anyone who frequents it regularly.
The lack of Garda resources to police the streets of Dublin, the open dealing of drugs on city streets, and the tolerance of anti-social behaviour are a large part of the problem.
An effective policing and justice system could deliver the results required. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Ireland and Dublin all need more gardaí. It is an established fact that more gardaí are leaving and retiring than are joining, despite large increases in population and crime.
As for all key workers, a system has to be introduced for weighting allowances to allow these people to live and work in Dublin. How can you do a good day’s work if you have many hours of a commute each working day?
We all want to see central Dublin return to its former glory but first someone has to fix the law and order issue. We don’t have years to convert small derelict sites and vacant buildings into use to solve our housing problem for teachers, gardaí and nurses. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – The Dublin city taskforce report contains no new ideas, nothing we didn’t already know and no grandiose notions. That’s why it’s brilliant.
Implement everything outlined in that report and Dublin will be one of the most livable cities in the world.
