Women in sport deserve more and better coverage

Plenty of events, such as Champions League semi-final, merit reporting in newspaper

The Irish Times – Letters to the Editor

Sir, – Once again, I find myself dismayed by the lack of coverage of women’s sports in your newspaper.

Leafing through the sports supplement on Saturday, I saw pages dedicated to men’s rugby, men’s soccer and men’s GAA. The only reference to women’s sport is a thumbnail picture on page nine regarding women’s hockey – and, notably, this is also the only article in the supplement written by a woman.

There are plenty of women’s sporting events deserving coverage, such as the Uefa Champions League semi-final featuring Katie McCabe, which is broadcast live on RTÉ, yet merits no mention.

The signal you are sending to young girls in Ireland is a damaging one: that women’s participation in sport and in sports journalism are not deemed worthy of print in a national newspaper.

As we strive for inclusion, visibility and recognition of the dedication of women in sport, this is disappointing. We deserve better. – Yours, etc,

REGINA MCKEON,

Goatstown,
