Sir, – A woman called Lilly McCauley sold newspapers at the corner of Hawkins Street and Poolbeg street all her life, taking time off only to have her children.
She sat in her Irish Times sponsored hut for the latter years, but for donkey’s years before that she stood outside the Theatre Royal.
Her stories were great and appreciated by everybody from the great and the good of the theatre and the press to those who passed her on their way to and from work. She didn’t wheel her wheelbarrow, but she was as real to the people of Dublin as any Molly Malone. Anybody who knew her – and there were thousands over the years – will smile inwardly when they hear her name.
Worth considering? – Yours, etc,
