Sir, – As a television presenter, he has been a consummate professional, conducting many fascinating, entertaining and sometimes hilarious interviews and introducing new talent to his audience, while facilitating generations of Irish people to look afresh at important issues in our society.
On his morning radio programme, he was treasured company to those working at home, a kindly ear to the troubled, a lover of people, a compassionate fund-raiser – quite simply the best broadcaster we have ever had.
Happily, he is still with us, a great example of active age, still presenting programmes and passionately promoting road safety. This true Dub is no one-hit wonder – he has stood the test of time. My choice is Gay Byrne. – Yours, etc,
