A society without a dream?

Sir, – David Kane’s letter (December 15th) struck a chord. King Solomon expressed a similar idea: “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. Some of the greatest achievements in history began with a dream, so let’s reject the “sure-what-can-you-do?” attitude and start imagining a new future. I want a nation we can be proud of; a legacy our children will appreciate.

I have a vision of communities that care for the weakest and most vulnerable; where we embrace the marginalised. I’m dreaming of honesty, integrity and humility in public life. I’m longing for a selfless generation – for people who will see a need and give themselves (not just their money) to meet it.

Why not celebrate what the recession and the Budget can never take away? Love, compassion, generosity, hospitality, caring . . . I can’t change anyone else. But I can certainly start with myself! And perhaps it will be catching?

It would be good to spread an epidemic of kindness this winter and not just the flu. – Yours, etc,
