Sir, – The appointment of Drew Harris as the new commissioner of the Garda Síochána is a significant step in the right direction (irishtimes.com,June 26th). His wide depth of knowledge of the socio-political landscape of the Republic combined with his hands-on experience of the realities of policing Northern Ireland place him in pole position to lead the force forward.
