Madam, - The Revenue Commissioners' warning to accountants and tax advisers last week (Cliff Taylor's report, November 8th) smacks of bullying. It also shows an extraordinary lack of understanding of the role of these professionals.
Does the Commissioner not understand that part of an accountant's responsibility is to guide his client (the taxpayer) through the tax system to minimise his liability?
That is what he is paid for. If that means finding a loophole in the legislation to avoid tax, so be it. It is quite legitimate, and if the Commissioner feels aggrieved he should direct his ire at the legislators, not the accountancy profession. - Yours, etc.,
