Sir, – I am concerned that the €100 household charge will not be enough of a contribution to meet the needs of the State. I have a tiny amount of money left at the end of each month and I would like to give it to the Government.

I’m just not sure where to send it.

Should I send it to Nama to pay the salaries of the bankrupt property developers working for it? It takes quite a lot to make up their €200,000-plus salaries, after all. The Seanad is still there, and that costs a lot to run; should I send it there? I hear some TDs have huge dry cleaning bills. God forbid they should look shabby, like the rest of us now, when they are telling us that if we don’t get a life they will pull the sky down upon us to make sure we do. To which TDs should I send my last few bob? What about county councillors, who despite getting a salary to reduce the likelihood of corrupt payments were still rezoning land to beat the band? Maybe their salaries and expenses weren’t enough; perhaps I could give them a dig-out?

Answers on a postcard titled “Ireland in €100 Insults”. – Yours, etc,
