Sir, – I read with interest Cliff Taylor's opinion piece on what is essentially an article about intergenerational inequality ("Why do young people always end up paying the bills?", February 5th). Ireland has form in this regard given that its national minimum wage rates permit different payment rates for those under the age of 20. Let's remember that the standard minimum wage rate of €10.50 does not equate to the living wage, never mind being paid €9.45 if one is aged 19, €8.40 if one is 18, and €7.35 if under 18.
These age-based minimum wage rates should be abolished. – Yours, etc,
