Agricultural education

A chara, – Brendan Byrne (August 11th) may well be right that it was to Michael Tierney, rather than the bishops, that the Costello government capitulated in 1956. The fact is that Tierney and the bishops were in full agreement on the issue.

In 1950 Tierney proposed that the Agricultural Institute would be a constituent college of NUI only, with no involvement from TCD. It is unlikely that the bishops would have had any objection to such an arrangement. The Government’s proposal was that it would be affiliated to both universities. The government capitulated.
