An emblem for Rising and Somme?

A chara, – In reference to Mary Griffin's suggestion (October 30th) that we have a joint emblem for the centenary of the Rising and the Somme, May I suggest that the British have a joint emblem for the British and German soldiers killed in the first World War? British soldiers, no matter their origin, are commemorated with great solemnity in Britain. Those that fought and died in the Rising did so to rid Ireland of British rule. The suggestion that there should be a joint emblem is bordering on the bizarre. – Is mise,

Sir, – Mary Griffin informs us that “many people now acknowledge that honouring the memory of those who fought in Dublin or France need not be mutually exclusive”. Really? Those who, as she puts it, “fought in France” were members of a British imperial army that forever fought against Irish freedom and during the Rising destroyed our capital city with incendiary shellfire and then proceeded to execute the 1916 leaders, one of whom was a wounded prisoner. Mutually exclusive? I should think so. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – Further to Mary Griffin’s search for a suitable emblem for both the Rising and the Somme, how about a picture of a gun? – Is mise,
