Madam, - In heaping praise - rightly - on our rugby team for its performance against Australia, Jack Kelly (November 4th) castigates our soccer team for its recent lapse against Switzerland.
But is he comparing like with like? The rugby players have been preparing for the World Cup for months, together with Eddie O'Sullivan, whereas Brian Kerr had barely a week with the soccer lads. In the end, it was two defensive blunders which cost us the Swiss game, in which we fielded an under-strength side.
And it's not just soccer players, who are overpaid. Sadly, professional rugby has destroyed the clubs. At least they're still thriving in the beautiful game.
