Sir, - Kevin Myers despaired (An Irishman's Diary, December 24th) that no one would be reading his piece on Christmas Eve, but I read and enjoyed his lament, as I enjoy all of his work, and I know that he has enough fans to make up a decent total, even on such a day, so he needn't really have felt neglected.

How would he like to hold my dismal record? I have good reason to believe that, when I was profiled in a radio programme broadcast by the BBC from Belfast, my interviewer and the sound engineer formed the sum total of my audience. I claim that nobody else on the planet heard my words or listened to my taste in music, for, as I was choosing my first record, on September 29th, 1979, His Holiness the Pope was down on his mouth and nose, kissing the sacred soil of Ireland. - Yours, etc., Sam McAughtry,

Comber, Co Down.
