Sir, - I fully support the words of John O'Shea of Goal (May 4th) regarding Pol Pot. The desire of the international community to bring Pol Pot's henchmen to justice, in the aftermath of his death, is 20 years too late.
It doesn't bode well for the people of Algeria who have endured the most horrific massacres and human rights abuses over the past six years, and whose plight has been consistently ignored by the international community.
In spite of the shameful apathy of the international community culminating in the recent session of the UN Commission of Human Rights, I would persist in demanding an independent international investigation into the atrocities being committed in Algeria, to bring the perpetrators of human rights abuses to justice.
Such an investigation is needed now and not 20 years down the line. - Yours, etc., Barbara Monahan,
Clontarf,
Dublin 3.
