Archbishop McQuaid

Sir, - There has been recent mention that John Charles McQuaid, former Archbishop of Dublin, never mentioned individuals in his public statements.

This is incorrect.

I recall one of his letters read at all the Sunday Masses in his diocese. It was noteworthy because there was an individual named.

The subject was the travelling community and their very difficult living conditions. He drew to our attention, and for our edification, the work in this difficult area of one person. This was Mr Bewley. The letter left his hearers in no doubt of his great regard for this gentleman, who, I believe, was a member of the Society of Friends. - Yours, etc., Declan Grehan,
