Automation, a basic income and volunteering

Sir, – I refer to Padraig O'Morain's "Respect for people essential as redundancies speed up" (Health + Family, May 2nd).

He is right that jobs are being lost and that more will be lost due to automation.

An answer might be increased involvement in voluntary work. Think of all the money that could be saved if communities could come together and care for the elderly and people with disabilities in their own homes. It would provide dignity and respect for all. Sports events also provide immense opportunities for purposeful volunteering.

With a basic income guaranteed, there may in fact be a lot more fulfilment derived from such roles than from many desk-jobs. – Yours, etc,
