Away With Donnybrook

Sir, - With so much talk about Dublin's traffic problems, it was interesting to read about the plight of the unfortunate Bill Beesley (February 9th), a member of the curiously-named Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Mr Beesley is a regular commuter from Bray to St Stephen's Green and is somewhat annoyed about the existence of Donnybrook village on his way into town. This 100-yard stretch of road is too much for an "advanced" motorist, it seems. As a former resident of the area I think B.B. is talking about Morehampton Road, that final irritating problem as he nears his goal.

As he says, "how long is this 100-yard stretch of road going to be allowed to disrupt the free flow of traffic?" I would suggest that to satisfy Bill B., the best solution would be to dynamite Morehampton Road, at considerable expense, so that he and his advanced colleagues can pursue their advanced course to St Stephen's Green, maybe three vital minutes sooner than at present.

However, rather than destroy a valuable section of Dublin 4 real estate, dating from about 1880 - built before the Institute of Advanced or any other Motorists came into existence - could I respectfully suggest that our friend should consider the advanced initiative offered by the DART, which will cost him far less stress as he contemplates the "disruption" caused by the unfortunate existence of Donnybrook. - Yours, etc.,
