Sir, – There has been much coverage lately of the burden of expense incurred by families at this time of year in kitting their children out for the return to school (Home News, August 3rd).

My children were fortunate enough to attend a school where books were passed on from one year to the next (without a cost to parents, if I remember correctly), and in the basement there was a “shop” where second-hand uniforms could be bought and sold.

A school in an area of disadvantage and deprivation? No, a fee-paying school in Waterford city, where such practices were considered to make good financial, environmental and common sense. I hope they still continue to this day. – Yours, etc,
