Sir, - (1) Since 1989 there have been 124 eases of BSE in Ireland. (2) There are 7,000,000 cattle in Ireland. (3) Where BSE was diagnosed or even suspected, the affected animals were destroyed and incinerated or buried and the owner compensated at market value, and now even the herd is destroyed.
(4) Since 1990 the use of meat and bone meal in feeding stuffs has been banned. (5) Not a single case of BSE has occurred in steers, which form the bulk of our beef export trade. (6) There is still no conclusive evidence of a link between BSE and the human disease CJD, and it is only a possibility.
In view of all this, the scare is ridiculous. Enjoy your Irish beef "as you always did. - Yours, etc.,
