A chara, - The condition of the Dublin beaches from Sandymount to Dun Laoghaire is the most disgusting I have seen anywhere in my life. it seems to me that the principal donor of the effluent is a sewage treatment plant in Salthill, designed like a modern art museum and euphemistically called West Pier Pumping Station, to disguise its function, no doubt.
But nothing can disguise the foul odoriferous emission characteristic of these phenomena from New York to Kent nor the sight of raw excrement, not to mention floating and beached condoms and sanitary aids and God knows what else. A few hundred yards away at Seapoint, human daring is at its peak when swimmers dip in this putrid stew.
As a Dubliner returned from abroad after nearly 40 years I find it inexcusable and embarrassing to say the least. Surely with the fastest growing European economy and considering the amount of aid and other assistance we dispense abroad, can't we do something about the environmental mess on our own doorstep? - Yours, etc.,
