Building Bridges

Sir, - All people of goodwill wish President McAleese well in her obviously genuine wish to bridge the ever-widening gap between the communities on this island.

Unfortunately, as a potential recipient of this construction exercise, and aware of her past record, reinforced by revelations during the campaign, the two words that spring immediately to mind are "Greeks" and "gifts".

I sincerely hope to be proved cynically pessimistic. - Yours, etc.,
