Sir, – Of all the harebrained schemes thought up in an effort to encourage people to lose weight, this must surely take first prize. (I daren’t say “the biscuit”). I have every sympathy with restaurant owners who are resisting this ridiculous initiative to put calorie counts on menus (Home News,April 17th). If people really want to lose weight they know to follow the simple rule: eat less.
Furthermore, they are perfectly capable of assessing the approximate calorific value of any given item on a menu for themselves, as, given a choice between chips and a salad, a diner hardly needs a calorie count to show which contains fewer calories. – Yours, etc,
