Canadian connections

Sir, – It is interesting to read of the links between Charlie Haughey’s home Abbeville and Richard Montgomery, the American revolutionary general who you report was reared there (Front page, May 20th).

You describe Montgomery as the leader of the continental army that captured Montreal from the British in 1775. If that was the whole story, Montreal might now be part of a 51st state. But the occupation of Montreal was short-lived. The goal of Montgomery’s invasion of Canada was Quebec city, the political centre of British rule. Montgomery and his army arrived there a few weeks after occupying Montreal. He was killed in an unsuccessful attempt to capture Quebec city and rally the inhabitants to the American revolutionary cause. – Yours, etc,
