Madam, - Roger Sawyer (Opinion & Analysis, August 3rd) cites a couple of reasons only for the secret circulation of copies of selected extracts from the "Black Diaries" viz: to prevent any reprieve; to influence the US authorities.

But the British had aims in mind as well. They sought to destroy Casement's reputation and thus to deny him the status of patriot martyr. They failed. - Yours, etc,
