Madam, – Historically, there is a strong correlation between low solar activity and cold weather in Europe. Solar scientists in the US have recently confirmed a sharp decline in solar activity (Front page, June 17th). It seems likely that the current sunspot cycle will be comparable with the low solar activity at the start of the 19th century when meteorologist John Dalton recorded a 30-year period of severe winters.

This will have serious implications for home owners, businesses, transport firms and especially farmers who need to prepare now for many more cold winters. I certainly plan to buy snow tyres for my car! – Yours, etc,
