Citizen Traveller

Sir, - Kevin Myers says it all (An Irishman's Diary, March 18th). His summing-up of the difficulties between Travellers and settled people is the most sensible I've seen.

Of course Travellers have rights (respect for their life-style, well-equipped sites etc.), but rights bring responsibilities, and only the Travellers themselves can claim these rights and deliver the necessary follow-through this entails.

It is surely wrong to place Traveller sites alongside the homes of equally disadvantaged people who have no clout to insist that their rights are also protected, and who are trying to live on modest means and keep their environment up to an acceptable standard. - Yours, etc., Joan O'Flynn,
