Cleaning up the the Grand Canal

Madam, – While I applaud the fact that Waterways Ireland intends to dredge parts of the Grand Canal, may I respectfully request that, this time, it should be done correctly. Whoever dredged the canal back in the 1980s did it back-to-front. From reading Derek Evans’s Angling column (January 17th) it would seem that the same may happen this time.

Dredging should start at Portobello Harbour and proceed downstream, by doing this any sediment churned up in the process will drop out further down and will subsequently be collected. – Yours, etc,
