Sir, - I am currently researching the life and works of Col John Edwards (1751-1832) of Old Court, Bray, Co Wicklow, for the forthcoming bicentenary of the 1798 Rising.
Although a member of the gentry and a yeomanry captain, he was in favour of Catholic emancipation and sympathetic to the Irish poor; he sought to conciliate the United Irishmen rather than drive them into insurrection. A role model for our times?
I would like to make contact with any descendants (or anybody with further information) through your columns, all local searches having proven fruitless. -Yours, etc.,
From Eva O Cathaoir
