Sir, May I, through your columns, congratulate Telecom Eireann on the production of the Irish Telephone Directory 19961 97 on CD-ROM.
It brings another convenience to the workplace (and, I am sure, to many homes) the search for the elusive, dog eared (and sometimes expurgated) telephone directory should no longer be a serious irritant.
Now, with the dearth of facilities for recycling waste paper, even the environment should benefit.
With the march of IT, and our innate capacity to adapt to it and exploit it to advantage, I suppose it is reasonable to anticipate the computerised Irish Telephone Directory (with, perhaps, access to other telephone directories) being incorporated in the software of public telephones.
Mindlessness and lack of civic consideration for public property can, on occasion, make the search for a functional telephone directory in a public booth a frustrating experience, particularly for those of us who still drive with both hands on the steering wheel! Yours, etc., 27 Montrose Crescent, Artane, Dublin 5.
