Madam, - I was disappointed at the choice of photographs accompanying Mary Fitzgerald's article in your Weekend Review last Saturday. Her piece was superbly crafted and gave the full context of Pope Benedict's speech, but the photographs debased her work by concentrating on the sheer hatred felt by some. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Thank you for publishing the full text of the speech delivered by Pope Benedict XVI in Regensburg (The Irish Times, September 18th).

The Pope made the claim that "a reason which is deaf to the divine and which relegates religion into the realm of subcultures is incapable of entering into the dialogue of cultures".

The reaction from Islamic sources would seem to indicate that "a dialogue of cultures and religions" based on the problematic notion of "the reasonableness of faith" is also doomed to be a dialogue of the deaf. - Yours, etc,
