Madam, - In your coverage of the John McGahern Seminar (July 25th and 26th), there are several references to an "Argentinian" poet who, having picked up English from listening to Bob Dylan, will translate McGahern's work into Spanish.

Despite the unorthodox source of his English, I am sure Senor Gambolini would never describe himself as "Argentinian". He comes from a country called Argentina or, more formally, the Argentine Republic. As there is no such place as Argentinia, the adjective "Argentinian" is incorrect, however often the media may repeat it.

Please do Senor Gambolini the courtesy of referring to him correctly as an Argentine poet. The same goes for Pumas, pampas, gauchos and tangos - all of them Argentine. - Yours, etc,

MICHAEL DRURY,
