Madam, - A major humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people is unfolding in East Africa. It demands a generous response from the developed world.
In addition to humanitarian assistance, the countries affected need good, honest governance and the rule of law.
John O'Shea of Goal has been outspoken on these issues for many years and has recently demanded action from the UN on security protection for Darfur refugees and aid workers. In addition, the UN needs to be doing much more for the millions of people living precarious lives in anarchic, failed states (such as Somalia) and states in the process of collapse (such as Zimbabwe). Otherwise, humanitarian crises will continue to unfold with increasing frequency. - Yours, etc,
Dr L.F. LACEY,
