Madam, - As a prospective beneficiary of the National Pensions Reserve Fund I would favour its use to resolve the - hopefully, temporary - difficulties of the principal Irish banks.

It seems the only available option is a fire sale to the rougher elements of US financial enterprise, such as were previously involved in reducing our telecommunications system to its present state.

In view of his evident inability to dominate dialogue with defaulting bankers paid 10 times his salary, do we really think the Minister for Finance will cut any ice with tycoons "earning" 100 times that amount? - Yours, etc,

Madam, - I was appalled to hear that the Minister for Finance met Irish banking chiefs last week in Farmleigh, of all places.

These pompous, arrogant men, through their greed and profligacy, have ruined the lives of so many people in this country, while presumably retaining their own cosy jobs.

As far as I am concerned these people should have been met in the middle of the Red Cow roundabout on a wild, wet, wintry night. Farmleigh, how are ya! - Yours, etc,

Madam, — In the interests of all could I borrow one of your recent Letters headlines and lend it to the banking fraternity? "Credit where credit is due" - now, please. - Yours, etc,
