A chara, - Mr Trimble in his article (The Irish Times, July 15th) states that "the institutions most valued by Unionists will be suspended but the Human Rights and Equality Commissions, the Commission on Policing and the review of criminal justice will remain." This, he claims, is one-sided. Do I read him right?

Surely a successful democracy rests upon the key issues of human rights, equality and prudent and fair policing. It was the absence of these factors that fuelled 30 years of sectarian strife in Northern Ireland. These basic principles must never be compromised or suspended. The only way forward is through the implementation of human rights, equality and balanced policing. The unionist veto must be vetoed now. - Is mise,
