Cyclists In The City

Sir, - While I fully agree with Eimear Coffey's comments (November 9th) that many cyclists don't abide by the rules of the road - and I also witness this each day - the other side of the coin is the number of acts carried out by motorists in complete contravention of the rules of the road.

Cycling between Dun Laoghaire and Clonskeagh each day, I have to look for motorists emerging from side streets without looking; motorists failing to stop at yield signs; vehicles parked on cycle lanes, going through red lights, covering yellow boxes, swerving over to the kerb because the driver is either (a) on a phone, (b) fixing their hair/makeup, or (c) reading a newspaper; vehicles turning left without indicating, doors of stationary cars opening suddenly, cars reversing out from parking spaces; cars cutting in front of me; cars swerving into the cycle lane - if one exists - to avoid vehicles in front which are waiting to make a right turn., often without any consideration for someone who happens to be cycling in the lane at that time!

Even when confronting drivers who were clearly in the wrong, I too have been given the one- or two-fingered salute and told where to go before they speed off! - Yours, etc.,

Gavin Kelly, Woodbrook Glen, Bray, Co Wicklow.
