Sir, - The response of the Garda to the discovery of Mr Paul McQuaid's body is completely outrageous. The suggestion that costs incurred in resources and overtime in the search for Mr Trevor Deely in some way justify their failure to locate Mr McQuaid's body cannot go unchallenged.
Even a cursory search of the lanes in the immediate vicinity of Judge Roy Bean's would have spared the family and friends of Mr McQuaid some of the profound distress they must have suffered these past weeks. How many resources could this possibly require?
The Garda press office spokesman's suggestion that "you'd be as well starting looking in Wicklow as in Wicklow Street" is both trite and offensive. The events of this week have clearly demonstrated the fallacy of this attitude. The Garda should stop attempting to deny responsibility for its dereliction of duty and learn from the tragic outcome of this case. - Yours, etc.,
Alan Crilly, Bremore Drive, Balbriggan, Co Dublin.
