Sir, - Recently I have noticed an increase in the amount of road signs as we enter various counties informing us of the number of people killed from road accidents over the last four years. This is an action to be commended and hopefully other counties will follow suit.
I would like to suggest a further measure which I saw recently on a driving holiday in France.
Certain regions of France have similar signs informing us of the number of people killed over the last few years. In addition to this, as you drive through the region, you come upon life-size wooden cutouts of people (adults and children) on the side of the road where an actual fatality occurred. The cutouts are all painted black with a red tear painted through the face.
This I feel is a very effective method of communicating the message "Slow Down, Speed Kills". I know that every time I passed one, I automatically checked my speed. - Yours, etc.,
Mark Hayes, Mallow, Co Cork.
